Anti Social

The majority of smokers took up smoking (between the age of 10 - 20) for social reasons, to ‘fit in', to be cool within their peer group. When they were young, it was the social thing to do.

If you want to stop smoking or know how to encourage someone to quit smoking you should be aware that increasingly the social acceptability of smoking has switched and smoking is deemed to be unsociable. It is banned on public transport and those workplaces that allow smoking are becoming a rarity. Clients have often told us that they actually support the smoking ban at work as it limits the amount they smoke.

Many smokers tell us they are now embarrassed to be a smoker. Increasingly, they find that smoking is becoming more and more anti-social and with the ban on smoking in public places, smokers are feeling increasing pressure to quit.

The reality of course, is that smoking is anti-social. By continuing to smoke, smokers are putting the health of non-smokers at risk (passive smoking causes many preventable deaths each year).

The many toxic and non-toxic ingredients in cigarette serve a number of purposes. Some of these ingredients are also added to mask the smell and even visibility of 'side-stream' smoke from the burning tip of the cigarette, to minimise discomfort to non-smokers. Unfortunately, these ingredients make it harder for non-smokers to see, and therefore avoid, other people's smoke.

Not only are there risks to the health of others, but the smell of smoke and cigarettes is extremely unpleasant, and one of the first things ex-smokers notice soon after they quit the habit. Here's what Lucy Caswell had to say about this after she quit:

Many public houses and restaurants, keen to balance the needs of their customers have installed better ventilation. Nevertheless  this will still left them vulnerable to legislation from employees who are forced to spend long hours in polluted air.

The experience in New York and Ireland has shown that social life still goes on without cigarettes. If you want to stop smoking or learn how to encourage someone to quit smoking you should know that many of our clients state that smoking ‘being perceived as anti-social' is now a major reason to stop smoking.

Our clients report that they now able to enjoy socialising more, particularly with family and children:

“Now my health is better, and I have more energy. I'm not out of breath any more and my clothes don't smell. It's as if my taste buds have healed and I can taste things as they really are.

My sense of smell has improved and when you pass someone smoking in the street, they really stink and I think, phew! I used to smell like that!

“Eric: I'd heard about the Stop Smoking Centre from Mick, another taxi driver. He'd heard from Pat who has also stopped. That's when I decided to book.

Joyce: It's nice to smell and taste things. And my daughter can pop in with her children who have asthma without worrying whether it's safe. It's changed our lives. We've saved lots of money, recently been on holiday to Kos in Greece.”
