Body Count
Like people all over the world, you may remember being stunned by reports of the Asian Tsunami on Boxing Day 2004. The devastation and loss of life were without parallel. Entire towns and village communities wiped out. Children orphaned, families torn apart. Those who perished didn't have a chance when the earthquakes and waves struck.
It is salutary to realise that tobacco causes a similar number of deaths each year. Unlike those wiped out by the Tsunami, smokers have a choice. If you are a smoker or would like to know how to encourage someone to quit smoking here is some information, which may help.
Imagine what it would be like to play Russian roulette with three bullets instead of one loaded into a six shot revolver. Would you press the barrel to your temple and pull the trigger? Yet half of all smokers will die from diseases caused by smoking. However, unlike Russian roulette and most victims of the tsunami you won't die so quickly. The odds are you will suffer a lingering painful death…
Cancer, heart disease, bronchitis and emphysema are the bullets loaded into your revolver. None of them offer a quick or glamorous end. Like poison bullets, they'll kill you slowly… By smoking an average 25 cigarettes a day you've loaded the dice by giving yourself 25 times the risk of getting cancer, which is a particularly nasty way to die. And you wont get to chose whether you are taken by leukemia, lung cancer, or cancer of the mouth/throat, pancreas, bladder, kidney or stomach.
Although a long drawn out death from such conditions is often extremely painful, the emotional pain may be greater. Family, friends and relations will not enjoy the experience of watching your demise. Half of those who die from smoking will have 21 years of their life washed away.
