Cravings
If you want to stop smoking or you want to know how to encourage someone to quit smoking, you may be concerned about the fear that when they quit smoking, they will experience cravings or symptoms of withdrawal from the nicotine. The reality is that this yet another one of the many myths that surround stopping smoking. If you want to stop smoking or know how to encourage someone to quit smoking this may help you understand why so many find it hard to stop smoking.
We spend a lot of time talking to people at our Stop Smoking Centre, explaining what is actually happening when you smoke, and how your mind is the most powerful tool you have to enable you to quit, dispelling the myths which cause fears for many smokers.
We deal with the myth of nicotine addiction and then explain that the ‘cravings' people fear, are not an automatic consequence, once we have changed the way the unconscious mind works.
If you want to stop smoking or encourage someone to quit smoking you need to realise that although smokers understand (with their conscious logical mind) that smoking is a deadly habit that can cause sickness and premature death, their unconscious, which controls habits, may have many positive associations for smoking. Thus, unconscious conflict arises because these positive associations and beliefs collide with their desire to stop smoking.
Common conflicts experienced by smokers include: ‘smoking helps with stress', ‘a
cigarette and a drink go together', 'It's my time' etc. So if you want to stop smoking
or discover how to encourage someone to quit smoking you need to realise that whenever
there is a conflict between the conscious and the unconscious mind, the unconscious
will win, every time, because the unconscious is around 90% of the total of the mind.
However, using our specialist methods, clients typically report that they quit smoking
easily with no cravings. This is because we are able to resolve any conflicts at
an unconscious level, and it is these conflicts or ‘mixed feelings', which are the
cause of the cravings. When both parts of your mind are working together, becoming

It was just like sitting there relaxing and chilling out. I was made to feel very

When other people smoke it doesn't bother me. My husband has never smoked so he's really happy not to share a house that smells like an ashtray.”

P.S. Smokers who gain weight are experiencing the consequence of unconscious conflicts not being resolved. The quitter ‘stuffs down' their ‘mixed feelings' with food.
