The Habit of Smoking (Written by Paul Stanyer, who stopped smoking after one session early in 2004)
“If you want to stop smoking you are part of a very big club. You know why you want to stop – not least because 20 a day costs around £1700 net a year* with your health likely to suffer even more pain than your bank balance.
But of course, quitting isn't easy. Many smokers believe, wrongly, that they are addicted to nicotine. Yet as any doctor will confirm, after 48 hours without a ciggie, all nicotine has left the body.
What smokers are actually ‘addicted' to is their habit. That's because many people start smoking during their impressionable teenage years, when peer group pressure encourages us to be part of the crowd. We smoke at parties, we smoke when we drink, we smoke during coffee breaks, after meals and maybe after sex. We do so because we have taught ourselves to equate smoking with pleasure. And every time we enjoy a cigarette we reinforce that belief to the extent that we are subconsciously frightened to stop because we don't know how we could enjoy those situations if ‘deprived' of a cigarette (though many millions do, including former smokers).
Of course, we also smoke many cigarettes where there is no association with pleasure, perhaps to alleviate boredom or combat stress, but these leave us feeling imprisoned by our habit, and aid our desire to quit. The trouble is, we worry that if we quit we would cease to enjoy the situations where we mistakenly associate smoking with pleasure, so we continue with the habit but expose ourselves to great danger. Sounds familiar?
The reality is that once you understand how the mind develops a habit in the unconscious part of the mind, then you are on the road to understanding that you can change those habits, freeing yourself from harmful habits like smoking or unhealthy eating, and regain control of your life.”
